Look of the Day: Speckled Scribe

Hi, everyone! As I write this, I'm on a train from Toronto to my hometown, about 4 hours away. The scenery isn't the most exciting, but this is the first time in a while that the landscape has been green and summery, so that's definitely a bonus! I'm headed home for the weekend for my little sister's bachelorette party! She's getting married next month (hard be believe it's so soon!) and this is the weekend we let loose before all the hubbub of the big day!

Quite appropriately, today's Look of the Day would be an ideal party look. It's unlike anything I've tried before and I'm so happy I gave it a go! A couple months ago, I saw that one of my favourite bloggers, Coco from The Beauty Milk had created a speckled eyeliner look inspired by Illamasqua's Spring Imperfection collection (to see her version, click here!). I was enamoured with how unique and beautiful the effect was and quickly rushed to the Illamasqua website to learn more! Just like their Speckled Nail Varnishes, which I've featured previously on the blog, their speckled eyeliner technique is inspired by the beautiful imperfections found in nature, like freckles or the patterns on a robin's egg. A lovely sentiment!

I soon decided that this was a look I had to re-create. To do so, I treated myself to Illamasqua Precision Ink Liquid Eyeliner in Scribe. The shade is pitch-white, super pigmented, and waterproof. It has a stiff, precise sponge tip that makes application incredibly easy. Here's a look at it:

To imitate the speckled effect, I first created a bold winged liner look using my trusty Revlon ColourStay Liquid Eyeliner Pen in Black. I made the liner a bit thicker than normal, so that there was a decent surface to speckle! Once the black liner was dry, I used Scribe to add tiny white dots on top. I started more precisely on the inner corner of the eye, then dispersed the speckles more widely as I approached the outer edge, where I let the white dots go "outside the lines" of the black liner. I finished by adding a few black dots, using the Revlon Eyeliner Pen, to the outer corner as well. Here's a closeup of the finished look:

To complete the eye look, I added two coats of black mascara (Fresh Supernova Mascara in Black) and a pop of colour underneath the eye, care of the lovely MAC Pearlglide Intense Eyeliner in Undercurrent

I paired the eye with soft pink cheeks (Laura Mercier Powder Blush in Rose Petal) and deep rosy lips (Chantecaille Lip Chic in Amaryllis). Wanted to add some colour to the look while still letting the eyes be the focus.

Here's another shot of the look, followed by a complete break-down of what I used:

The Breakdown:

Foundation: Revlon ColourStay Liquid Foundation (Combination/Oily formula) in Buff
Concealer: BeneFit Fake-Up in Light (under eyes) and Hard Candy Glamouflage in Light (on blemishes)
Powder: Hard Candy Welcome Matte Translucent Mattifying Powder
Bronzer: Bourjois Delice de Poudre Bronzing Powder #51
Blush: Laura Mercier Powder Blush in Rose Petal

Brows: Anastasia Brow Powder duo in Ash Blonde (now known as Taupe)
Primer: Urban Decay Primer Potion in Original
Eye Shadow: Mix of shimmery light gold and champagne shades from the NYX Mysterious Brown Eyes Palette (on lid, brow bone, and inner corners of the eye) and a mix of deep brown shades from the same palette in the crease
Eyeliner: Revlon ColourStay Liquid Eyeliner Pen in Black and Illamasqua Precision Ink Liquid Eyeliner in Scribe, with MAC Pearlglide Intense Eyeliner in Undercurrent underneath the eye
Mascara: Fresh Supernova Mascara in Black

Lipstick: Chantecaille Lip Chic in Amaryllis

And a few more shots of the look:

And now a quick horror story for those of you who are still reading :) On the box of the Illamasqua Precision Ink it clearly states "do not use on inner rims of the eye". Or something to that effect. I clearly didn't see this and thought "hmm... this look might be even better with Scribe on my waterline as well!" So after the speckled look was already completed, I applied some of Scribe on my waterline and my eyeball was instantly on fire. Ouch! I of course blinked my eye to ease the pain. When I opened my eye and looked in the mirror, I could see (barely) that my entire eyeball was coated with a milky layer of the eyeliner. So much so, you could barely see my pupils. I looked like a ghoul and my eyes were burning! Of course my first instinct, being a good blogger and all, was "I can't ruin my eyeliner! I worked too hard on this!" Some quick work with a tissue saved my burning, ghastly eyeball and amazingly, the speckled liner remained unharmed. A makeup miracle! So long story short, please do not use Illamasqua Precision Inks on your waterline!

Ok, scary story over. Hope you enjoyed this look! Is speckled liner an effect you'd like to try?  Have you tested out any of the other shades of Illamasqua Precision Ink?

Thanks for reading! xo

  1. Auwtch I hate it when products really BURN your eyes! I had a burning sensation when I accidently had some of the Kiehl's BB Cream on my tearduct.. It was awful.

Like the effect you created. I think this would look great with colored dots as well!!
